The Misunderstood Journey of Discipleship

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

Luke 9:23–24

When we hear the word “discipleship,” what comes to mind? For many, it may evoke images of a rigid and structured process of religious training or following a specific set of rules. However, discipleship is much more than that. It is often misunderstood.

Discipleship Beyond Rules

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31-32

One of the common misconceptions about discipleship is that it involves adhering to a set of rules and regulations strictly. While guidelines can be helpful, true discipleship is about building a personal relationship with a mentor or teacher and growing in one’s understanding and practice of faith.

When Jesus called his disciples, he didn’t expect them to follow a set of rules unthinkingly. Instead, he invited them into a deep, personal relationship with him. He walked alongside them, taught them through his actions and words, and challenged them to grow in their faith. This relational aspect of discipleship needs to be more noticed and understood, overshadowed by a focus on rules and rituals.

The Journey of Transformation

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

John 15:16–17

Another aspect of discipleship that is often misunderstood is the concept of transformation. Many people view discipleship as a one-time event or program with a specific endpoint. However, the journey of discipleship is a lifelong process of growth and transformation.

Discipleship involves learning, unlearning, and relearning. It entails embracing new perspectives, questioning old beliefs, and allowing oneself to be challenged and changed. It is a dynamic and evolving journey that requires open-mindedness and a willingness to step out of one’s comfort zone.

Discipleship as a Community

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34–35

Discipleship is not meant to be a solitary endeavor. It is best experienced in the context of a community of like-minded individuals. The discipleship journey’s importance of fellowship and support cannot be overstated. Being part of a community provides accountability, encouragement, and the opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences and insights.

Sometimes, the misconception arises that discipleship is solely the responsibility of the mentor or teacher. However, each individual has a role to play in their discipleship and in the discipleship of others. It is a reciprocal process that involves both teaching and learning, giving and receiving.

Embracing a Missional Attitude in Discipleship

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

Discipleship should not be limited to a specific mold or stereotype. It should embrace diversity in terms of culture, background, and personality. Each person’s journey of discipleship will look different, reflecting their unique experiences, strengths, and weaknesses.

As we recognize and embrace the diversity within discipleship, we gain a richer and broader understanding of God’s work in the world. We learn from one another, celebrate our differences, and grow in unity.

Conclusion

Discipleship is often misunderstood as a rigid adherence to rules, a one-time program, or an individualistic endeavor. However, the true essence of discipleship lies in the relational aspect, the lifelong journey of transformation, the importance of community, and the celebration of diversity.

Let us embrace a fresh perspective on discipleship, moving away from misconceptions and towards a deeper understanding of what it truly means to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. May we strive to be both disciples and disciple-makers, inviting others into the transformative journey of faith and learning from one another along the way.
