Growing the Fruit the World Needs
Picture a quiet morning: a soft breeze, distant birdsong, a fresh start. In moments like these, we remember that the Holy Spirit doesn’t just visit—He cultivates. A life led by the Spirit looks like love that reaches out, joy that can’t be stolen, peace that stills the storm, patience that waits with hope, kindness that notices, goodness that chooses what’s right, faithfulness that stays, gentleness that heals, and self-control that chooses wisdom (Galatians 5:22–23).
Rooted in Christ, this fruit becomes the nourishment our world needs.
The Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23)
- Love that reaches out
- We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19); by this love, all people know we’re His (John 13:34–35). Love is patient and kind (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).
- Joy that won’t be stolen
- Jesus gives a joy no one can take away (John 16:22; John 15:11). We rejoice with inexpressible joy even in trials (1 Peter 1:8).
- Peace that stills the storm
- Jesus gives peace unlike the world’s (John 14:27), guarding our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6–7). He speaks “Peace, be still” to wind and waves—and to us (Mark 4:39; Isaiah 26:3).
- Patience that waits with hope
- As we hope, we wait with patience (Romans 8:25), like farmers awaiting harvest (James 5:7–8). Put on patience as God’s chosen people (Colossians 3:12).
- Kindness that notices
- Be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving as God forgave you (Ephesians 4:32). Love mercy (kindness) and walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8; see also Proverbs 11:17).
- Goodness that chooses right
- Overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). Walk as children of light, discerning what pleases the Lord (Ephesians 5:8–10; Galatians 6:10).
- Faithfulness that stays
- Bind steadfast love and faithfulness to your heart (Proverbs 3:3–4). Well done, good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:21). We hold fast because He is faithful (Hebrews 10:23; Lamentations 3:22–23).
- Gentleness that heals
- A gentle answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1). Restore others with a spirit of gentleness (Galatians 6:1). Learn from Jesus, gentle and lowly in heart (Matthew 11:29; Philippians 4:5).
- Self-control that chooses wisdom
- God gives power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7). Grace trains us to live self-controlled lives (Titus 2:11–12). Better to rule your spirit than to take a city (Proverbs 16:32; see also 1 Corinthians 9:25; Proverbs 25:28).
How This Fruit Grows
Fruit doesn’t grow by striving but by abiding. As we stay close to Jesus, the Spirit forms in us what we could never manufacture on our own.
- Abide in Christ
- Apart from Him we can do nothing; in Him we bear much fruit (John 15:4–5). Walk in Him, rooted and built up (Colossians 2:6–7).
- Walk by the Spirit
- Live and keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 25). All who are led by the Spirit are God’s children (Romans 8:14). Be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
- Renew your mind
- Be transformed by the renewing of your mind to discern God’s will (Romans 12:2; Colossians 3:1–2).
- Practice small, faithful steps
- Don’t grow weary in doing good; in due season, you’ll reap (Galatians 6:9). Faithfulness in little matters prepares us for more (Luke 16:10).
- Stay in community
- Stir one another up to love and good works; don’t neglect meeting together (Hebrews 10:24–25).
A Simple Prayer for Today
Holy Spirit, grow Your fruit in me today—shape my words (Psalm 19:14), order my steps (Psalm 119:133), and guide my reactions (James 1:19; Proverbs 15:1). Root me deeply in Christ, so my life bears what this world truly needs (John 15:5; Colossians 2:7). Amen.
