Fulfilling Jesus’ Call to Make Disciples
One of the most powerful and life-changing commands given by Jesus is found in Matthew 28:19-20, a passage often referred to as The Great Commission. These words are not just a suggestion or a gentle nudge; they are a call to action—a mission that Jesus commands all of His followers to take seriously. In this passage, Jesus says:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20, ESV)
As believers, we are called to step into this commission, empowered by God’s presence, to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the whole world. In this blog, let us reflect on what The Great Commission means and how we can live it out today.
A Command, Not a Suggestion
The Great Commission is not just a task for pastors, missionaries, or theologians—it’s a calling for every believer. When Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,” He invited all of us to participate in His mission. Sharing the love of Jesus and teaching others to walk in His ways is not optional; it is the natural outflow of our faith.
We see in Matthew 28:18 that Jesus begins His commission by saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” This means the authority and power of heaven itself back His command. We are not called to obey this command in our own strength, but through His power and guidance.
Making Disciples: What Does It Mean?
When Jesus tells us to make disciples, He’s emphasizing something deeper than simply spreading information or handing out tracts. A disciple is someone who follows the teachings, example, and mission of Jesus Christ. Making disciples involves building relationships, teaching others to know God, and modeling what it looks like to live out a Christ-centered life.
This directive is not limited to just speaking about the Gospel; it’s also about living it. In both word and action, we are called to reflect the love and truth of Christ so that others may see Him through us.
A Global Mission
Jesus clearly stated that this mission is for all nations. The Good News is not confined to one culture, race, or language. It is meant for every corner of the earth, from the bustling cities to the remote villages, from your neighborhood to the other side of the globe.
While not everyone is called to foreign missions, we are all called to play a part in God’s global story. Whether it’s supporting missionaries, mentoring someone in their faith journey, sharing the Gospel with your coworkers, or even leading your own family in discipleship, we each have a role to fulfill in expanding God’s kingdom.
He Is Always With Us
The weight of this commission might feel overwhelming, but Jesus gives us a comforting promise: “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” This assurance reminds us that we never go alone. When we step out in faith to fulfill the Great Commission, Jesus accompanies us every step of the way.
His presence provides strength when we feel weak, courage when we feel inadequate, and peace when we feel afraid. It’s not about our ability; it’s about His power working through us.
How Can We Respond?
- Pray for Guidance and Boldness
Begin by asking God to guide you in fulfilling the Great Commission in your daily life. Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel and for the courage to step out in faith when He opens those doors. - Live Out Your Faith Daily
Be a living testimony of Christ’s love, integrity, and compassion. People are more likely to listen to the Gospel when they see it reflected in your life. - Share Your Faith
Don’t underestimate the power of your testimony. Your story of how God has transformed your life can be a powerful tool in drawing others to Him. Share it when the Spirit prompts you, and trust that God will use your words to plant seeds. - Support God’s Global Mission
Pray for and support missionaries and ministries that serve unreached people groups. Whether through financial giving or prayer, your contributions can make an eternal impact. - Make Disciples Around You
Discipleship isn’t limited to far-off places. Start where you are—with your family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors. Invest in relationships, mentor in the faith, and teach others to grow in their walk with Jesus.
Accept the Call
You were created and chosen with a purpose: to bring glory to God and share His Good News with the world. The same Jesus who gave this Great Commission over 2,000 years ago is still calling His followers today. Will you say yes to His call?
The work may be great, but the reward is far greater. The seed you plant in someone’s life today can grow into a faith journey that impacts generations to come. Take heart, for as you step out to make disciples, Jesus is with you, empowering you, guiding you, and strengthening you.
This year, let’s commit ourselves anew to be part of God’s mission. Together, as His church, we can fulfill Christ’s command and bring light to every corner of the earth. Let us rise to the call of The Great Commission and watch as God uses us to transform lives, for His glory and for the sake of His kingdom.
Are you ready to accept the invitation of Jesus and make disciples as He commanded? Let this new year be marked not just by resolutions to improve ourselves, but by a renewed resolve to make an eternal impact in the lives of those around us, through the beautiful and powerful message of the Gospel!
