Week 1: Calling
Welcome to the first week of our blog series on the 4 C’s of Christian Leadership. As we begin, we’re diving deep into the theme of “Calling,” exploring the God-given purpose that uniquely qualifies each of us for leadership within God’s Kingdom. Our Scriptural guides, Jeremiah 1:5 and Ephesians 4:1, establish a profound foundation for understanding our individual callings from God.
What is “Calling” in Christian Leadership?
“Calling” in Christian leadership transcends typical career choices or roles of influence. It is a divine beckoning, crafted by God, directing us to lead and live in ways that echo His will. A calling in this context refers to a personal invitation from God to engage in His redemptive plans, impacting others through service, leadership, and love.
How God Equips and Calls Unique Individuals
Scripture is rife with stories of ordinary individuals called to extraordinary missions. God’s pattern often involves choosing unlikely candidates and wonderfully equipping them for their roles. From Moses and Esther to the New Testament figures like the disciples and Paul, God prepares each person in unique ways to fulfill their divine purpose.
- The Calling of the Disciples: Jesus called ordinary men—fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot—to become founders of the early church. He saw beyond their professions and perceived their potential to become “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Their transformation from humble beginnings to leaders of faith underscores the empowering nature of God’s call.
- Paul’s Transformation and Calling: Paul’s calling was dramatic; a fervent persecutor of Christians who became an apostle to the Gentiles. His encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-19) was a pivotal moment that redirected his life’s work to spread the Gospel across the globe, demonstrating that God can repurpose any life for His glory and purposes.
Practical Steps to Discern and Embrace Your Calling
- Prayer: Intimately communicate with God, seeking His guidance and clarity on what He has purposed for your life.
- Spiritual Gifts: Engage in discovering your spiritual gifts through various means like assessments, spiritual inventories, and feedback from church community leaders.
- Mentorship: Connect with seasoned Christian leaders who can offer wisdom and insight, helping to identify and affirm God’s calling in your life.
Biblical Examples of Embracing Callings
- Moses (Exodus 3-4): Called from a simple life of shepherding to confront Pharaoh and lead Israelites out of Egypt, Moses’ journey reflects transformation through divine empowerment.
- Esther (Esther 4:14): Positioned in royalty “for such a time as this,” Esther’s bravery in saving her people highlights the providential nature of God’s call.
